· What are the current challenges in managing people and how can HRM help managers overcome these problems?
I work in Technology service sector, and in our industry the technology is ever evolving. So, finding the right resource with right skillset is always a challenge. Even if the right resource is found externally, retaining the talent is another challenge. So, as I see, in our industry there are 3 critical challenges. Finding the right skillset required, second, training and retraining the current resources to upgrade or change their skillsets and 3rdis to retain the right people with right and valuable skillsets.
In my opinion HRM can play a huge role in training resources, especially when those resource come out of project. Hiring managers can inform HRM what kind of skillsets are in demand or might be critical for success of future projects. HRM can design competence building courses for employees and train them.
Hiring the right person with right skillset is another critical task. Based on job description received from the hiring managers the HRM can post ads in right channels such as job search sites or social sites such as linkedin. Finding right skillset is very critical for the success of any project and organizations overall growth plan.
Retaining the right talent is difficult too. Mostly because whatever skill is in demand, competing companies would offer better salary to hire those talents. Now, increasing the salary is not the way to stop a resource from leaving the company. And an employee does not always leave company for more money HRM can train managers and supervisors to be effective to increase job satisfaction among existing employees. Providing them better work life balance, training and roles that they desire would definitely help. Employees who does not feel valued or heard , leave too, and as you can tell the supervisor or manager can prevent this from happening (Ryan,2017).
· Personally, if you were a Human Resource Manager, what’s the biggest strength you would bring the role? What would your biggest challenge be?
I have more than 11 years of experience in working in this industry. As team lead I know the issues each team and the projects face. So, having ground level experience working in the IT team would add value in HR team. Since I have idea or HR policy and how those impact on ground level, I think that will be my greatest strength. I would know how HR policies impact, what works well and what does not. And may be that will help me determine what can be changed to get better results. In a survey by Officeteam 36% of HR professional recruiting and identifying the right candidate is the biggest challenge ( Half, 2015).
I can think of many challenges. First thing would be finding right skills and talents will always be a problem. I will have to depend of hiring manager and interview panel to choose the right talent. Secondly, I think getting candid feedback from employees on any HR policy would be a problem. As I have seen, employees often are not candid, may be because of the organization culture or maybe they simply do not believe that anything can be changed with their feedback or maybe they do not want to get into trouble by providing negative or constructive feedback, whatever the reason may be, I believe this would be a challenge.
